Khalid dorastał w rodzinie wojskowych (matka śpiewa w amerykańskiej armii stacjonującej w Niemczech, tam też spędził większość dzieciństwa). Do Stanów Zjednoczonych powrócił, jako nastolatek.
Khalid zadebiutował utworem „Location”, który powstał przy współpracy z producentami: Syk Sense (Drake, Bryson Tiller), Tunji Ige oraz Smash David (Tinashe, Jeremih).
Khalid udostępnił go jeszcze przed ukończeniem liceum. Singiel został bardzo dobrze przyjęty przez media muzyczne, a sukces viralowy i rosnąca popularność zaowocowała kontraktem z Right Hand Music Group/RCA Records.
„Inspiracje mojej muzyki wywodzą się z dorastania w wojsku, wielu podróży, ciągłej nauki jak zaczynać od nowa i tego, że dobrze czuję się w nowych miejscach.
Każda piosenka to pewną opowieść, która składa się na historię mojego życia” – wyjaśnia Khalid i dodaje: „Chcę, aby ludzie zrozumieli, że te piosenki opisują moje doświadczenia.
Nie opierają się na konkretnym gatunku muzycznym. Ich podstawą jest nastrój, zawierają pełną gamę emocji”.
Debiutancki album Khalida – „American Dream” ukazuje się 3 marca 2017 roku. Promuje go singiel „Saved” – melodyjna ballada skierowana do byłej partnerki artysty. Nie brak w niej wibrujących dźwięków gitary, która przeplata się z solidnym basem i aksamitnym wokalem Khalida.
