Na rynku muzycznym Nelly zadebiutował w 2000 roku albumem “Country Grammar”, który znalazł się w Top 3 notowania Billboard 200 najchętniej kupowanych płyt w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
Jego druga płyta studyjna – “Nellyville” – powtórzyła ten sukces za sprawą singla “Hot In Here”, który stał się numerem jeden notowania Billboard Hot 100 najczęściej kupowanych singli w Ameryce.
To właśnie z tego krążka pochodziły także utwory: “Dilemma” nagrany wspólnie z Kelly Rowland, “Work It” z udziałem Justina Timberlake’a oraz “Air Force Ones” stworzony wraz z Murphy Lee i St. Lunatics.
Nelly ma na koncie także wiele sukcesów wykraczających poza karierę muzyczną. Artysta zaprojektował swoją własną markę odzieżową dla kobiet “Apple Bottoms”. Amerykański raper stał się także współwłaścicielem drużyny koszykarskiej Charlotte Bobcats wraz z Michaelem Jordanem. W 2005 roku Nelly zadebiutował również na dużym ekranie w filmie “Wykiwać klawisza” wraz z Adamem Sandlerem i Chrisem Rockiem.
